Power supply IC saves space in car navigation systems

R2S25402FT

Renesas Technology Corp. has launched the R2S25402FT single-chip power supply control IC for car navigation systems. R2S25402FT is Renesas' first power supply IC designed for car navigation systems. The IC provides power supply circuits for a processor doing main car navigation processing and for DRAMs. Together with a DRAM terminating resistance voltage supply circuit, on a single chip, the device is available in a 64-pin QFP housing.

R2S25402FT offers approximately 20 percent reduction in mounting area compared with current Renesas products through use of high-level integration. The R2S25402FT IC provides single-chip implementation of processor and DRAM power supply control circuits together with a linear regulator as a DRAM terminating resistance power supply circuit. These circuits, previously configured by combining a number of parts, can now be implemented using a single R2S25402FT, enabling fewer parts to be used.

The product is also claimed to help lower system costs. The internal linear regulator incorporated as a DRAM terminating resistance power supply allows a further reduction in the number of parts, enabling previously necessary parts such as a voltage step-down coil, smoothing capacitor and drive FET to be eliminated, thus cutting system costs.

The chip's DRAM backup mode is useful for car navigation systems when engine is off, said Renesas. In a car navigation system, map information and so forth must be saved before the engine is switched off and displayed again when the engine is switched on again. Map information is stored in DRAM, which is volatile memory that requires application of a refresh current to retain its data. The R2S25402FT incorporates a supply circuit for this refresh current and achieves high efficiency of approximately 70 percent with an 8mA current. This is useful in preventing battery drain when the engine is off.

The chip also offers wide-range power supply voltage specification, helping improve system design efficiency. R2S25402FT features a wide power supply voltage range of 3.4-35 V, allowing it to operate directly on the vehicle's battery voltage. This simplifies power supply design, improving system design efficiency.

Other key specifications include an output voltage setting range of 0.8-5V, variable operating frequency from 350KHz to 480KHz and a switching frequency in backup mode of 25KHz (10 percent).
