Sanyo Electric Co. has announced plans to raise output of its rechargeable batteries for notebook computers, the Associated Press reported. The Osaka-based electronics maker said it has earmarked $245 million for the expansion plan that will involve two of its plants in Japan.

According to a company spokesman, Sanyo Electric aims to boost monthly production to 70 million from the current 60 million. A new factory is also being planned to be built at a yet-to-be-determined site next year to help increase capacity, he added.

The expansion comes amid consumers' growing preference for laptops over PCs and as the struggling electronics maker continues to undergo heavy restructuring.

Sanyo Electric is the world's top supplier of rechargeable batteries for laptops with a market share of 40 percent.
