Capitalizing on the fast ramp of small form factor (SFF) enterprise HDDs in 2007, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies announced the shipment of its Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive, the company's first SFF enterprise product. The 10,000rpm Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive was developed specifically for high-performance and low-power requirements of servers, delivering up to 147Gbytes of capacity and 3Gbps SAS interface.

Enterprise customers are increasingly seeking solutions to reduce space and power requirements in data centers. These, coupled with a new interest in establishing government mandates for green data centers, is driving a transition to small form factor hard drives from the traditional 3.5-inch drives previously used in servers, said Hitachi. Industry analysts have predicted that this year will see a turning point in the volume ramp of small form factor enterprise hard drives.

The Ultrastar C10K147 HDD provides a 50 percent smaller foot print and a 40 percent reduction in z-height over traditional enterprise drives. This compact size provides optimal space and power efficiencies while still delivering high performance with 10,000rpm spin speed, high-speed SAS interface and 16Mbytes data buffer. These features combine to make the Ultrastar C10K147 hard drive well suited for blade servers and 1U and 2U rack-mounted servers for mission-critical applications.

The Ultrastar C10K147 features 4/2 platter versions with 2/1 recording heads, respectively. The product offers 137 billion bits/inch? maximum areal density and 1,057Mbps max. media data rates. With 9/8.4W typical operating power and 300G/2ms pulse non-operating shock, the device operates with 2.9bels typical idle acoustics. It measures14.8mm in height (max) and weighs 227g (max), with an operating temperature of 5C to 55C.

Along with the SFF hard drive, Hitachi's portfolio of enterprise drives includes the 15,000rpm 3.5-inch Ultrastar 15K300 and 10,000rpm 3.5-inch Ultrastar 10K300 HDDs for mission-critical storage and the 7,200rpm 3.5-inch Ultrastar A7K1000 1 Terabyte HDD for lower duty-cycle enterprise applications. All three products are shipping now.
