Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd is sampling 4.8-inch and 7-inch WSVGA mobile displays that specifically target ultramobile PC (UMPC) and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The 4.8-inch display is aimed at wireless broadband Internet and portable navigation systems for consumers, while the 7-inch panel targets vertical UMPC markets including children's education and mobile professional applications.

The 4.8-inch display uses Samsung's single-chip display driver that combines a source driver, timing controller, level shifter and LVDS receiver. By using Samsung's latest advanced integration techniques, the overall circuit footprint and component count have been reduced more than any other comparably-sized product, while providing a high-resolution path for manufacturers to upgrade from the WSVGA format to WXGA, said the company. Moreover, the 4.8-inch model consumes only 0.9W thanks to the company's low-temperature polysilicon implementation.

The devices feature transmissive micro-reflective display type with a contrast ratio of 350:1 and 262,000 colors. The 4.8-inch display is a low-temperature polysilicon device type with a power consumption of 0.9W (including panel and backlight). The 7.0-inch amorphous silicon display consumes about 3.6W (including panel and backlight). Both devices offer a brightness of 350nit and color saturation of about 50 percent of NTSC. Viewing angles are as follows: 60 (top), 60 (bottom), 65 (left) and 65 (right).

Samsung is working with Intel Corp. to accelerate market acceptance of UMPC and MID market opportunities, specifically in the field of electronic display reference designs.

The products were showcased at the Mobile Internet Community exhibition area at the Intel Developers Forum last April.
