TI DSPs used in Node B base stations for TD-SCDMA trials

DSPs from Texas Instruments Inc. are used in 80 percent of the Node B base station equipment being supplied for the trials of China's TD-SCDMA air interface technology, according to market research groups.

The trials, which began in April in 10 cities, are an important step toward deploying 3G technology for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Earlier this year, the country's Ministry of Information Industry mandated that TD-SCDMA would be China's standard of 3G mobile communications.

According to market research group iSuppli, ZTE and Datang Mobile have both deployed TI's TMS320TCI100 DSP in China Mobile's Node B base stations.

The market research group predicts the two Chinese equipment suppliers between them have been awarded 83 percent of the base station orders issued. Deployments are scheduled in Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen.

Another market watcher, In-Stat, recently estimated that TD-SCDMA subscribers in China will increase rapidly in 2008 and reach 52 million in 2011. "We predict that more than 10,000 TD-SCDMA base stations will be located in 2007," said Kevin Li, In-stat analyst.

TI said it provided its wireless-infrastructure-optimized DSP for both the indoor/outdoor macro and micro Node B products. The single-chip TMS320TCI100 DSP, made in a 90nm process, is said to enable base station OEMs to optimize the number of processors needed for a full carrier of TD-SCDMA.
