Seoul Semiconductor Inc. has launched a super bright and ultramini flash LED that it says will replace xenon lamps that are typically used as flash light sources in digital cameras or 5Mpixel camera phones. The FCW211Z series of flash LEDs emit up to 100cd, which is more than twice the brightness level of conventional LEDs for flash, said the company.

FCW211Z can operate at a high current of 2A, and the Light Energy (light power (lux) x flash exposure time in secs) of 26.49 lux-secs is comparable to that of a high capacity xenon lamp. It is expected to exceed the level of xenon in the near future, according to the company. In addition, FCW211Z also delivers a size advantage, measuring 3.5-by-3-by0.75mm, compared to a Xenon lamp for mobile phones, which measure 10.1-by-4.6-by-3.5mm, according to Seoul.

Unlike xenon lamps, the FCW211Z series enables the display of moving images and continuous shooting without the need to charge, and the series offers more than two times longer life span than conventional xenon lamps, said the company.
