Osram Opto Semiconductors Inc. has developed the next generation of its super-bright Ostar headlamp LED. The improved headlamp LED features five chips connected in series, with a color temperature of 6,000K and a peak performance of 620 lumens at 700mA, which is twice the brightness of its predecessor.

Operating without a lens, the high brightness of the Ostar headlamp LED has been achieved through a combination of changes. thin-film chip technology, in combination with an improved phosphor converter, gives this new LED high luminance and improved efficacy with minimum space requirements, said Osram.

Samples of the new Ostar Headlamp LED are currently available, with volume production to begin in Q3 2008.
