Venture capitalists continue to go global, with China the preferred spot for manufacturing investment and India favored for R&D and engineering, according to a new survey.

Nevertheless, the survey by Deloitte & Touche and the National Venture Capital Association released July 11 found that U.S. venture capital investment overseas was lower than expected, with only a 1 percent increase over last year in the number of U.S. companies planning to expand overseas investments over the next five years. Indeed, the report said U.S. firms are so far only "dabbling" in places like China and India.

Still, China and India continue to attract the lion's share over global technology investment. China remains the top choice in manufacturing investment while India attracted the most venture capital for R&D and engineering projects. However, the study noted that the United States also remained popular among foreign investors for relocating R&D projects.

"There is as much interest in investing in the United States as there is in U.S. overseas investment," said Mark Jensen, director of Deloitte's Venture Capital Services unit.

The study found that both U.S. and overseas investors are planning more overseas strategic alliances to solidify their local presence. "Venture capital is a 'contact sport' and venture capitalists have to be close the companies they invest in," Jensen said.

For engineering projects, the study found that India was the top choice among the 528 study respondents, including 34 percent from U.S. venture capital firms. China was the second choice for engineering projects, including 14 percent of U.S. respondents.
