FET plus driver saves board space by 80%

Fairchild Semiconductor Corp. has introduced the FDMF6700, a fully optimized and integrated FET plus driver power stage solution in an ultracompact 6mm x 6mm MLP package for synchronous buck converters. The FDMF6700 integrates a driver IC and two power MOSFETS, targeting space-constrained applications such as small-form-factor desktops, media center PCs, ultradense servers, blade servers, advanced gaming systems, graphic cards, networking and telecom equipment and other DC/DC applications with limited board space.

A typical buck converter in a PC motherboard may include per phase: three n-channel MOSFETs in a DPAK package and one driver IC in a SO8 package. By replacing these components with the highly integrated FDMF6700, designers save more than 80 percent of board space, said Fairchild. Another benefit of the integration of components in a single package is the elimination of parasitic inductance of board traces and leads of individual discrete package, which will improve overall efficiency.

This family includes the FDMF8700 (8mm x 8mm MLP, 30A) standard DrMOS module, the FDMF8705 (8mm x 8mm MLP, 18A) low-current DrMOS module and FDMF6700 (6mm x 6mm MLP, 25A) ultracompact DrMOS module.

The FDMF6700 is available in a 40-pin (6mm x 6mm) MLP. These products use Pb-free terminals and have been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All Fairchild products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's RoHS directive.

The devices are available now with a delivery of eight weeks ARO. Pricing starts at $2.50 each in quantities of 1,000.
