Tool ups efficiency of GE-PON, IPTV QoS measurements

Anritsu Corp. has launched its MD1230B data quality analyzer with a new built-in application software to increase the measurement efficiency for GE-PON systems used by FTTH networks and IPTV QoS used by next-generation networks (NGN).

Installing either the MU120131A 10/100/1000M Ethernet module or the MU120132A GbE module in the MD1230B, in which the new GE-PON and IPTV measurement software is installed, supports simultaneous multiport GE-PON QoS tests, performance tests, monitoring and analysis, replacing the previous troublesome separate tests for each port.

Various IPTV usage conditions, such as repeated switching of channels (zapping) and increases/decreases in the number of channel viewers, can be simulated, supporting measurements without configuring a large-scale test network and raising the efficiency of GE-PON and IPTV QoS measurements.

The GE-PON and IPTV measurement software is installed as a standard function in the MD1230B data quality analyzer. Installing either the MU120131A 10/100/1000M Ethernet Module for electrical I/Fs, or the MU120132A GbE module for optical I/Fs in the MD1230B supports GE-PON and IPTV QoS verification, performance tests, monitoring and analysis.

Key features
The product features an easy-to-configure multiport measurement environment required for GE-PON measurements, said Anritsu. Since a GE-PON system shares an optical network between multiple users by splitting one optical fiber, the measurement equipment must support multiple ports. A maximum of five 12-port MU120131A modules or five 8-port MU120132A modules can be installed in the MD1230B to offer either electrical I/Fs (10/100/1000M [RJ-45]) for up to 60 ports, or optical I/Fs (1000BASE-X [SFP]) for up to 40 ports.

Using the device, in-system operations are verified easily because GE-PON system control signals can be monitored, said Anritsu. The all-in-one MD1230B supports simultaneous end-to-end performance measurements of all clients in a 32-branch GE-PON system as well as GE-PON in-system verification, helping cut system analysis costs.

The device also does QoS measurements in various IPTV usage conditions. The load on an IPTV multicast network can be simulated to verify IPTV QoS under high load conditions by emulating the continuous channel switching (zapping) and increases/decreases in the number of channel viewers that occur on actual multicast networks. Both evaluation costs and times are reduced because there is no need to configure a large-scale test network.

The device is targeted at developers and manufacturers of GE-PON systems and equipment (ONU, OLT) and ISPs for the construction and maintenance of IPTV services
