Wavecom tips 'first' automotive-grade 3G wireless CPU

Wavecom SA launches its fully programmable 3G Wireless CPU, the Q26Ultra, using high bandwidth cellular capabilities to address the growing automotive and alarm/security markets.

The Q26 Ultra, with W-CDMA functionality, bridges the entire spectrum of bearers from 2G, 2.5G, 2.75G and 3G. It targets two growing markets for connected machine-to-machine applications: automotive and security. With this new product, Wavecom claims to be the only wireless provider today to offer an automotive-grade design and qualification that will allow car makers to meet the demand for in-vehicle infotainment. For the security market, the high band-with capacity makes it ideal for video cameras in sophisticated alarm and security systems.

"The new Wireless CPU from Wavecom is automotive-grade quality and it is designed to meet our customer commitment of ensuring seamless compatibility between existing and new Wavecom products," said Philippe Guillemette, Wavecom's chief technology officer. "Not only is its form factor compatible with the existing Q2686 and Q2687, but the Q26Ultra is built on Wavecom's next-generation Open AT Software Suite 3.0 providing seamless customer application portability. These two features help facilitate the smooth upgrade of customers' existing Q26 series-based designs when their future applications require larger bandwidth provided by 3G networks."

The Q26Ultra, which was designed using Wavecom's extensive automotive expertise in wireless communication, opens the door to future growth for this new product. By adding 3G capability, it responds to a growing demand for mobile video and high-speed Internet access, something that is expected to be standard functionality in many future generations of passenger cars.

The Q26Ultra is fully programmable via Wavecom's M2M and automotive Open AT environment, providing native execution of embedded, standards-based and C applications. The product has a tri-core processor featuring dual DSPs and ARM926 running at 208MHz and has multiple hardware interfaces that can run a variety of digital and analog peripherals. Q26Ultra also features Wavecom's W-CDMA protocol stack software, ensuring product continuity for customers while offering interchangeable form factor and customer application software with current Q26 Series

Like other Wavecom Wireless CPU devices, the Q26Ultra is fully type-approve certified, includes IPR indemnification and is RoHS compliant.
