Synopsys Inc. has bought Mosaid Technologies Inc.'s DDR memory controller and PHY semiconductor IP assets for about $15 million in cash. The agreement is expected to close next month, with the payment subject to a $2 million holdback for one year. As part of the deal, Synopsys will also get an exclusive license to some patents and pending applications associated with Mosaid's current memory controller and PLL product lines.

Synopsys said it plans to hire Mosaid's Semiconductor IP engineering team. The company will integrate the IP and products into its DesignWare IP portfolio, increasing Sysnopsys' lineup in standards-based connectivity IP.

"With the sale of our semiconductor IP assets to Synopsys, we will move forward as a pure-play IP company focused on patent licensing and advanced memory R&D," John Lindgren, Mosaid president and CEO, said in a statement. He added, "These assets would perform better in the hands of an industry leader with complementary product lines and the scale to succeed in a competitive market, allowing us to concentrate on our core business."

Mosaid signaled earlier this year that it is looking to sell certain parts of semiconductor IP portfolio. In February, the Canadian group cut its workforce of nearly 120 by half, acquired patents outside of its main memory chip business and sold its test technology operation to Teradyne Inc. for $20 million.
