Osram starts construction of Malaysia LED plant

Germany-based Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH has broken ground on a LED factory in Penang, Malaysia.

The groundbreaking ceremony, for what the company claimed would be the world's most advanced LED factory, was performed by Rudiger Muller, CEO of Osram and Koh Tsu Koon, Chief Minister of Penang, Malaysia. The factory is set to occupy 30,000m? and is expected to open in Q2 2009.

The factory in Penang, apart from Osram's main plant in Regensburg, Germany, will manufacture LED chips using gallium nitride. In addition, the capacity of an existing LED assembly line in Penang, which began operation in 1972, will be increased by more than 50 percent.
