Qualcomm: Broadcom-Verizon deal a 'positive development'

Keywords:ITC ban on Qualcomm? wireless broadband? wireless carrier?

Qualcomm Inc. stated that a license agreement announced between Verizon Wireless and Broadcom is a positive development on its struggle to lift the ban on its chips in the United States.

The agreement permits Verizon continued importation and sale of mobile devices, which contain Qualcomm chips that have been banned by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). The deal removes uncertainty for Verizon and its customers by ensuring that the wireless carrier will be able to continue to sell wireless broadband products powered by Qualcomm's chipsets and software.

Although the announced deal would appear to reduce the risk of disruption of Verizon's network, Qualcomm stressed that it does not resolve the problems arising from the ITC's order for the many other affected wireless carriers, their subscribers, suppliers and the public safety and other vital organizations that depend upon their networks and services.

Given the continuing negative impact of the ITC order on the public interest and safety, Qualcomm said it is continuing to work with its partners on seeking presidential veto of the ban.
