Dell has announced that it is ahead of schedule to achieve a multiyear goal of recovering 125 kiltons of computer equipment by 2009. The company also renewed its worldwide challenge to computer manufacturers to offer free recycling to consumers.

The company reported the recovery of more than nearly 35 kilotons of unwanted IT equipment from customers in 2006, a 93 percent increase over 2005 and 12.4 percent of the equipment it sold seven years earlier. The computer manufacturer expects to reach 40 kilotons of collected equipment in approximately half the time it took one of its competitors.

"Protecting the environment is too important an issue for one company to be leading alone," said Michael Dell, company chairman and CEO. "Customers should not be forced into improper disposal due to a lack of environmentally responsible options. To that end, we are renewing our challenge to every computer manufacturer, regardless of size or location, to join us in offering a free, global consumer recycling program. It is the right thing for our customers and the earth we share."

Dell has implemented several programs to encourage easy and convenient product recovery options. Key initiatives include free consumer recycling, reconnect program, asset recovery services and product donation.

Dell also recently announced a long-term, global initiative to partner with customers and members of the "Re-Generation"said to be a group of people of all ages who care about the environmentto become the greenest technology company on Earth. The zero-carbon initiative includes IT lifecycle assessments, management of Dell's direct and indirect climate impacts, reduction of the company's carbon intensity and partnership with customers.
