More Toshiba Corp. notebook computer owners have been asked to trade in their batteries for new ones in the latest round of recalls.

Safety concerns were raised after three laptops using Sony Corp.-made battery cells made on December 3, 2005, caught fire in a period of 10 months. Toshiba instigated its battery recall program in September 2006.

Reuters reported that Toshiba is replacing 10,000 batteries in all, 100 percent more than the 5,100 units tagged as potentially defective, to make sure it got back all of the offending power packs.

Sony recalled a total of 9.6 million PC batteries last year, saying overheating could make the products potential fire hazards.

A Sony spokesman said the size of the latest recall is relatively small compared to the $418 million it spent for the replacements last year, and thus should have a limited financial impact on Sony.
