Anadigics Inc.'s AWT6223 UMTS/Edge penta-band power amplifier (PA) module is used in Samsung's SGH-I520 smart phone designed for Europe. The SGH-I520 is said to be the first Samsung phone to use the Symbian OS Version 9.2 for fast Internet access.

The SGH-I520 has a sliding form, offering many of today's advanced multimedia functions, including a 2Mpixel camera, a wide 2.3-inch QVGA screen allowing for the view of an entire Internet page, Bluetooth capabilities, and 50Mbyte internal memory along with a microSD memory card slot up to 2Gbyte. The SGH-I520 handset can connect to the Internet using technology allowing the user to download content at rates up to 1.8Mbps over WCDMA, HSPA or Edge networks.

The AWT6223 penta-band PA module incorporates Anadigics' second-generation High-Efficiency-at-Low-Power (HELP2) technology to reduce UMTS average power consumption by up to 50 percent. In WCDMA and HSPA modes, the power amplifier offers outstanding efficiencies of 41 percent at 28.5dBm and 21 percent at 16dBm, resulting in longer battery life and additional talk-time.

AWT6223 also includes a fully functional quad-band GSM/Edge PA, with excellent efficiency in the GSM850/900 bands and DCS/PCS bands in both GSMK and 8PSK modes. Anadigics' multi-mode PAs use the company's exclusive InGaP-Plus technology, which integrates HBT and pHEMT devices on the same InGaP GaAs die. These PAs are manufactured using a materials set consistent with EU's RoHS standard.
