Hitachi Ltd has unveiled its compact and contactless Finger Vein biometric authentication device and Software Development Kit (SDK).

Based on the original model that the company launched in Japan, Hitachi's new authentication system uses a finger vein pattern recognition technology that employs the finger's vein pattern as the biometric feature. Hitachi claims that the finger vein pattern is impossible to counterfeit because the vein is inside the body. According to Hitachi, this unique and "non-traceable" nature of finger vein biometric technology prevents counterfeiting which can be possible with existing biometric systems based on fingerprint, facial recognition and iris-scan.

Hitachi's USB finger vein biometric scanner, designated the PCT-KC8203 model, offers an IR LED and camera-based capture system. With a USB 2.0 interface, the 59mm x 82mm x 74mm device uses 5Vdc 5 percent for power, about The device offers a maximum enrollment of 100 fingers and offers several accuracy features such as false rejection rate of 0.01 percent, false acceptance rate of 0.0001 percent and failure to enroll rate of The process of data collection is contact-less. Light penetrates through the finger using a light-transmission technique to allow the detection of the structure of the vein pattern. The vein pattern is image-processed using a special algorithm resulting in digital data that can be stored in a relevant data repository. The device is compact and can be used for access control apps including for car entry, personal authentication, PC login and validation for ATM machines.

Meanwhile, the SDK features BioAPI2.0 Interface and appended security functions.

Full-scale availability of the device starts this month in Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania and others.
