Toyoto announced it has developed a plug-in hybrid vehicle ready for public road test in Japan, the United States and Europe, according to an Associated Press report.

These plug-in hybrid vehicles have batteries that can be recharged through a wall outlet, and like most hybrids on sale, they can recharge by converting energy from braking and when the wheels spin.

A distinct advantage of the plug-in feature is it allows the vehicle to run longer than regular hybrids. Other major automakers developing plug-in hybrids include GM and Ford.

The company claims it is the first manufacturer to receive government approval to conduct plug-in hybrid tests on Japanese pubic roads. However, a company executive disclosed that details of the road tests for the United States and Europe are still undecided.
