Tecate Industries Inc. has expanded the 2.7V PowerBurst family of cylindrical, radial-leaded ultracapacitor cells, extending capacitance value range from 0.5F to 300F.

The PowerBurst general-purpose ultracapacitors comprise the RoHS-compliant TPL and TPLS series. The TPL series is offered in 18 capacitance values ranging from 0.5-70F, while the TPLS series comes in four capacitance values from 100F to 300F. The TPL/TPLS ultracaps offer a capacitance tolerance of -20 to 30 percent.

The lightweight, small-form-factor parts feature an operating temperature range of -40C to 70C, a 500k charge/discharge cycle life and high usable capacity, according to Tecate.

Used to supplement and sometimes replace batteries, these electrochemical double-layer capacitors offer low equivalent-series resistance for high power and low loss during operation. The TPL/TPLS series, used for pulse and hold-up power in handheld and portable devices that use microprocessors, may be specified for energy storage in a broad range of space-constrained applications.

They can be used in conjunction with batteries or other power sources when batteries alone do not meet performance objectives, said Tecate. Cells are also used to hold or bridge power when the primary power source fails or when a battery is swapped out. These devices may be used in battery packs, wireless communications, mobile computing and industrial applications, including cellphones, portable data terminals, PDAs, pagers, peak power shaving and remote-monitoring equipment.

In quantities of 1,000, prices for the TPL series start at $1.70 each for parts with a capacitance of 10F. TPLS series devices start at $7.50 each for parts with a capacitance of 100F.
