 Flashwave 9500

Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. is moving add-drop mux (ADM) customers to the optical packet world with a new member of its Flashwave family that combines elements of Sonet, Ethernet and reconfigurable optical ADM (ROADM). While speculation has been rife among analysts concerning Fujitsu's use of externally developed Ethernet or ROADM modules, a Fujitsu spokesman said that "the Flashwave 9500 has as much internally home-grown technology as any product we have offered."

The 9500 system is different from other Flashwave transport products, which Fujitsu calls the Packet Optical Networking platform family. The initial 24-slot chassis will be followed by a high-density 9500 version, by another version intended for edge aggregation and by a 9500 intended for customer-premises applications.

The 12 line-card slots on the left side of the chassis can be populated with such blades as a 20-port GbE card, a dual-port 10GbE card, a tunable-laser 10GbE card, as well as eight-port Ethernet-over-Sonet and dual-port OC-192 Sonet cards. Dual switching cards in the center of the chassis use ASICs for combined packet and Sonet switching. Three slots in Flashwave are used for a ROADMone for an amp and two for a wavelength-selective switch. Finally, two slots are reserved for management functions.

The backplane can be upgraded to support both 40Gbit Sonet services and 100GbE. The current two-degree ROADM can also be upgraded to support multiple degrees of wavelength dropping and adding.

Ethernet services defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum, such as E-Line, are supported. The system supports pseudo-wire and multiprotocol label switching and has protection-switching speeds of 50ms for true carrier-class constraints.

Software and line cards will be interchangeable across future members of the Flashwave 9500 family. Fujitsu offers a line of software support tools, including the NetSmart 1500 Element Management System and NetSmart 2000 Planning Tool.
