Employ supply voltage control to save energy

Posted: 01 Aug 2007 ?? ?Print Version ?Bookmark and Share

Keywords:energy issues in mobile devices? supply voltage control? voltage regulators?

It is necessary to reduce energy consumption in circuit operations to achieve longer battery life in mobile devices. One new energy reduction scheme is to combine dynamic voltage and frequency scaling with power gating.

The energy consumed by mobile devices is a combination of switching energy and leakage energy. When switching energy is predominant, reducing supply voltage levels is effective in decreasing total power consumption because switching energy is proportional to the square of supply voltage. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), which controls supply voltage in accordance with operational frequency requirements, is particularly effective for this purpose.

This article by Yoshifumi Ikenaga of NEC Corp. discusses other previously proposed approaches to energy reduction and introduces the new scheme.
