Measure MEMS gyros for image systems

Advances in MEMS have allowed manufacturers to create complete gyroscope apparatuses on microscale chips. MEMS gyros are also getting cheaper and smaller with each passing year. These advances in technology and decreases in price are allowing integrated MEMS gyros to be used in many applications.

Today, gyros are most often used in consumer devices such as digital still cameras (DSCs) for image stabilization, notebook computers for hard-disk protection and digital compasses. Gyros are also gaining acceptance in automotive applications for use in electronic stability control. Industrial and consumer robotics will prove to be a large market space for gyros as that market grows to meet the demands of increased automation in assembly lines. In robotics, gyros will contribute to the automatic control systems that handle the movement of limbs and balance.

You may never use a MEMS gyro, but you probably haveand willrun across sensors with similar characteristics or systems with similar requirements. This article by Patrick Prendergast and Ben Kropf of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. provides a methodology for designing those systems with reprogrammable mixed-signal microcontrollers.
