Osram Opto Semiconductors will drop the production of passive-matrix displays based on OLEDs and will close its display manufacturing line in Penang, Malaysia by year-end. Refocusing its initiatives, Osram announced plans to concentrate its OLED activities on developing market-ready OLED lighting solutions.

Since end-2003, Osram has been manufacturing and marketing passive-matrix displays based on OLEDs under the brand name Pictiva. Global demand for the displays, which are used predominantly in communication systems, industrial applications and mobile consumer electronics, has lagged far behind the company's expectations, prompting Osram to withdraw from the display business.

"We have decided, for strategic reasons, to withdraw from the passive-matrix display business and close our production line in Penang," said Rudiger Muller, Osram CEO. "Our attention in the OLED sector will now be focused exclusively on our core business, lighting solutions with organic LEDs, for example for area lighting. The experience we have gained in the display sector will speed up the process considerably."

A team of 50 people is currently working at the research center in Regensburg, Germany to develop products and production methods for OLED lighting.

Osram will transfer the 270 workers from its Malaysia fab to other activities within the company including the new LED chip production facility in Penang. The company is also seeking jobs for the OLED product team in the U.S.
