Production at Dell Inc.'s new manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur near Chennai in India, its third in the Asia Pacific, has commenced. The PC giant marked the event with the delivery of the first "Made in India" desktop computer system to Infosys Technologies Ltd, one of its largest customers in the country.

"Current and future customers in India are the real beneficiaries of this manufacturing plant as we help simplify information technology for them," said Rajan Anandan, vice president and general manager of Dell India. "The Chennai operation reaffirms the strategic importance of India to Dell, providing significant impetus to our growth plans and prospects here, where we are already among the fastest growing computer systems suppliers."

Dell will pour a five-year investment of $30 million for the 202, 342m? facility. It expects an annual initial capacity for the Chennai operation of about 400,000 desktop PCs.

Aiming to expand its foothold in India, Dell has recently forayed into serving small and medium-sized businesses, as well as government and banking and financial services customers in the country apart from servicing large corporate customers.

Meanwhile, Dell has started manufacturing at a new facility in Brazil early this year and will open another one in Poland by year-end.
