Sharp sues Samsung for LCD patent infringement

Sharp Corp. filed a lawsuit August 6 against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd for the latter's alleged infringement of five LCD-related patents owned by Sharp. Also named in the lawsuit were Samsung's U.S. subsidiaries.

The alleged infringed technologies are found in LCD modules as well as in LCD TVs and mobile phones incorporating these LCD modulesall made by Samsung and sold in the United States by its subsidiaries. In its complaint, Sharp asked for compensatory damages and the prohibition of the sale of these infringing products. Sharp also requested a jury trial.

The five patents involved in the case hold U.S. Patent Numbers 4,649,383; 5,760,855; 6,052,162; 7,027,024 and 7,057,689, all of which relate to LCD modules.

Sharp said in its press release that it had tried to negotiate with Samsung for an LCD patent license since 2006. But both parties were unable to resolve the issue through negotiation, prompting Sharp to take the matter to court.
