Power-One Inc. has introduced what it claims to be as the highest current digital point-of-load (POL) module presently available.

The 60A ZY8160 is a fully-programmable DC/DC converter provides industry-leading power management capabilities with no additional cost or space requirements when compared to analog "conversion only" solutions. According to Power-One, ZY8160-based systems can reduce development time, components and PCB traces by up to 90 percent.

"The ZY8160 is an exciting addition to our maXyz Z-Series and provides the advantages of open-architecture digital power management to high-current data server, data storage and communications applications," said Bill Yeates, Power-One CEO.

When used with Z-Alliance-compatible ZM7000 series digital power managers (DPMs), the ZY8160 device facilitates the complete elimination of external components for sequencing, tracking, protections, monitoring and reporting. All parameters of the ZY8160 are programmable via the industry-standard I?C communication bus and an optional GUI. Configuration capabilities also include the ability for "on the fly" operating-parameter changes, without hardware changes, at any time during system development or service.

Highly programmable device
Programmable parameters include output voltages, sequencing, tracking and protection limits. These user-defined settings are stored in a DPM and are used to initialize the ZY8160 during system start up. Unlike other power management solutions, a ZY8160-based solution can operate autonomously in any system and does not require users to provide an I2C interface, host processor or non-volatile memory.

ZY8160's wide input (8-14V) and output (0.5-2.75) ranges power a variety of applications with only one part number to inventory. The device also features active digital current sharing and real-time monitoring and reporting of output voltage, output current, operating temperature and the status of all protections. The device's ramp rates and delays are easily set up using the Z-One GUI. The turn-on and turn-off of all outputs are controlled by the same clock, providing unsurpassed digital-timing precision.

According to Power-One, ZY8160-based systems can be configured to manage up to 32 digital POLs and analog components such as converters, fans and LDO regulators.

The device comes in a compact packaging with 2.4 x 0.55-inches (61mm x 10.4mm) SIP footprint and 1.1-inch (28mm) height. RoHS Pb-free and lead-solder-exempt products are available. Certifications to UL60950, CSA C22.2 No. 60950-00 and TUV EN60950-1:2001 are pending.

Pricing range from $18 to $20 each in quantities of 1,000. Samples and production quantities are typically available in six to eight weeks.
