HP tops Gartner's 2006 chip consumers list

The top five of semiconductor consumers in 2006 were Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc., Nokia Oyj, Motorola Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., ranked in that order, according to an advice firm Gartner Inc.

HP consumed about $14 billion worth of chips or about 5 percent of the total output of the semiconductor industry in 2006, Gartner said. Dell and Nokia both took in about $12 billion of chips, Motorola used $11 billion and Samsung, also a major chipmaker, used about $10 billion.

The top 50 semiconductor-consuming companies consumed about $161 billion in semiconductors in 2006, or about 61 percent of the global production. These firms had a higher percentage in communications electronics32 percent versus 26 percent for the market overallwhich was reflected in the number of wired and wireless communications firms in the company mix. Data processing represented 36 percent of the top 50 market, consumer electronics 19 percent, industrial applications 7 percent and automotive electronics 6 percent.
