Off its latest deal with the largest handset maker, Nokia, STMicroelectronics said it expects the demand for 3G mobile phones to be "very strong" in the second half of 2007, according to a Reuters report.

Tommi Uhari, VP and general manger of ST's mobile, multimedia and communications groups, said the company is strengthening its position in the 3G market as the value of 3G handsets are estimated to exceed 2G.

Nokia and ST have entered into an agreement wherein ST would design and build 3G chips based on Nokia technologies. Uhari said that as the first licensee of the Finnish company, ST is positioned to take a big share of the 3G market.
