Cenamps, the United Kingdom's national center for nanotechnology, last week spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremony for PETeC, a plastics electronic technology center located at Sedgefield, near Durham, England.

The $20 million facility is expected to become a national prototyping center, offering clean rooms and laboratories, as well as production and testing equipment which will be available on an open-access basis.

Technologies supported will include smart packaging, electronic newspapers, intelligent signage, point-of-care medical diagnostic devices, drug delivery devices, printed electronics for consumer products, flexible solar cells and solid-state lighting.

"This center will provide a bridge between the lab and the factory to facilitate the commercialization of new products," said Mike Pitkethly, CEO of Cenamps, in a statement.
