MIPS core powers VDSL2 residential gateway chip

MIPS Technologies Inc. has announced that Ikanos Communications Inc. has introduced the MIPS-based Fusiv Vx180 VDSL2 gateway processor. Ikanos' Vx180 single chip, multi-mode VDSL2 gateway processor is designed to deliver 2.7GHz of processing power, VoIP, multi-mode DSL and security, while supporting best-in-class QoS and wire speed performance.

Targeted applications include customer premise equipment (CPE), home networking, SOHO and SME networkingexplosive sectors within the burgeoning broadband arena. Infonetics Research predicts that annual broadband CPE revenue will hit $6.2 billion by 2010 as service providers continue to bundle voice, data, video and wireless services in triple and quadruple play offerings to attract new customers and reduce churn among existing customers.

"As new broadband access applications emerge and standards continue to evolve, our next-generation solutions must adapt quickly to meet the market demand for increased performance, flexibility and power-efficiency," said Dean Westman, vice president and general manager of Ikanos' gateway products group. "The proven performance and advanced features of MIPS' 24KE processor combined with Ikanos' Fusiv technology give our residential gateways an edge in a quickly advancing marketplace."

MIPS Technologies will be participating at the 7th Embedded Systems Conference-Taiwan (ESC-Taiwan) and the 15th EDA & Test-Taiwan Conference & Exhibition (EDA&T-Taiwan on August 23-24 at the Taipei International Convention Center.
