Japanese DSL provider Acca Networks Co. is planning on partnering with other companies to offer WiMAX services.

At a news conference, Masaharu Kimura, Acca president, disclosed that the company hopes to compile a plan for the new services by itself but that partnerships with other firms will be an efficient means of expanding operations and raising funds.

In addition, Acca VP Hidehiko Yuzaki disclosed that the company will retain a majority stake in the envisioned joint venture for new services based on WiMAX and that there will be at least three partners. He suggested that these may include a social infrastructure-linked operator and an investment firm.

Acca is one of the companies seeking government licenses for the next-generation high-speed wireless communications service.

Japan's communications ministry is set to grant WiMAX licenses to one or two firms. The ministry has barred NTT DoCoMo Inc. and three other firms providing 3G mobile phone services from applying directly for the licenses. Each of the four firms, however, is allowed to file an application through a new firm in which its stake is up to one-third.
