In the August issue of the Nano Letters journal, South Korean scientists presented a research on new electroactive elastic qualities in carbon nanotubes that can enhance the quality of display panels.

This is according to a report from, which stated that the discovery is expected to overcome motion blur effects in displays, a key weakness in LCDs compared to conventional CRT TV screens.

Lee Young-hee, a Sungkyunkwan University physics professor and one of the principal researchers in the discovery, said that improvement in picture quality can be attained by finely mixing nanotubes with liquid crystals and running an electric current through it. He explained that once electric current in run through the mixed material, the nanotubes expand up to four times their original size and shrink back to its normal once the power is turned off.

The immediate reaction, if regulated, allows for swifter changes in the light and pictures emitted by a display, which are not possible using only liquid crystals. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has shown interest in the project because it could lead to a completely new line of LCDs, he said.

Lee disclosed that tests showed response time falling to the extent that images can be changed in under 16 milliseconds, as compared to 20 milliseconds at present. Images that are onscreen longer than 16 milliseconds can be sensed by the human eye, affecting the smooth flow of images.

The team, he claimed, has developed technology that can mass produce 97 percent pure nanotubes for the future displays, but needs some time to finely and evenly mix this with the liquid crystals. In addition, the length of the nanotubes must also be controlled for it to be used for LCDs.
