White LEDs emit 7cd at medium-range current

Rohm Co. Ltd has developed white LEDs in two types of high-intensity, high-radiation packages: PSML1 (3.2mm x 2.8mm x 0.8mm) and PSML2 (4mm x 2mm x 0.6mm).

Developed as an alternative to CCFL for backlight and illumination use in sets requiring relatively higher intensities, the products incorporate a high heat dissipation package to efficiently emit 7cdsaid to be the highest in the industryusing current in the medium range (50-150mA).

Proprietary technology was used to solve the problems of excessive heat generation and low efficiency that have been plaguing mid-range LEDs by increasing the heat dissipation paths to the substrate and adopting an exposed copper frame with high thermal conductivity. The PSML1 features a heat dissipation of 70C/W and the PSML2 60C/W. With these features, life span is increased and high temperature operation is possible with no degradation in light intensity or fluctuation in color.

Applications include those requiring relatively high intensity backlights, such as car navigation systems, portable DVD players, illumination light sources, interior lighting, vehicle indicator displays and gaming devices.

Sample shipments began in July at sampling unit price of $2. Mass production will begin in November.
