Toshiba Corp. is launching a 320Gbyte 2.5-inch hard disk drive that it claims is the largest capacity 2.5-inch disk drive available.

The drive is part-numbered MK3252GSX and has a rotational speed of 5,400rpm. At the same time, Toshiba is launching the MK2049GSY with a rotational speed of 7,200rpm and a capacity of 200Gbytes. The MK2049GSY integrates a 16Mbyte buffer memory.

Both drives have a serial interface speed of 3Gbps. The drives are due to go into volume production in November, Toshiba said.

The drives are expected to be used for storage of movies and digital photos in high-end notebooks and improve overall system performance with high-speed data transfers.

Both models support an optional free-fall sensor function, which detects if the HDD goes into zero gravity and parks the head before it crashes. The drives also comply with the European Union's RoHS directive.
