Samsung Electronics Co. this week announced it will build a mobile Internet network in New York to expand its homegrown WiBro technology in the United States, according to a Korea.net report.

"Recently, we received a request from Sprint Nextel Corp. for the establishment of a WiBro network in New York," Choi Gee-sung, head of Samsung's telecoms business, told reporters at the 4G Forum held in central Seoul, South Korea. However, he did not detail the schedule.

In August 2006, Samsung signed a deal with Sprint Nextel, Motorola Inc. and Intel Corp. to cooperate in developing and commercializing WiBro in the United States, one of the world's largest communications markets. The WiBro network has since been built in five major U.S. cities and regions, Samsung officials said.

Samsung expects that the number of its WiBro network users in the United States will grow to 140 million in 2009 and 170 million in 2010.
