OS vendor Symbian Ltd has opened an R&D center in Beijing, China. The new facility is intended to continue the development of the Symbian OS and cultivate the company's entrepreneurial network in the booming China market.

At the inauguration ceremony, the software vendor announced that seven Chinese companies have joined the Symbian Platinum Program. The company also unveiled details of a planned local Symbian Academy program in collaboration with six local universities.

Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford underscored the importance of the China market, saying that shipments of Symbian-based cellphones grew 77 percent in Q2 and 12 percent of all Symbian devices are sold to China. He announced plans to beef up contacts with local partners and customers.

Including the new Beijing facility, Symbian operates four R&D centers worldwide, with the other three based in the United Kingdom and India.
