Atmel Corp. has unveiled the ATR1841 and ATR1842 front monitor diode ICs targeted at optical pick-up units of slim and ultraslim HD DVD and Blu-ray drives. The devices measure 3mm x 3mm and provide outstanding performance, said Atmel.

The ATR1841 and ATR1842 are said to support all the wavelengths used in CD, DVD and HD DVD/Blu-ray drives. Both devices have a serial interface, which easily allows manufacturers, using firmware, to change between the three gain modes and to adjust the gain by 6dB in each mode. The serial interface also lowers overall BOM costs as external potentiometers are no longer needed to control the gain. The ICs also enables reduction in pin-count, allowing the device to be packaged in Atmel's proprietary 3mm x 3mm QFN package.

This Atmel-patented open package has a cavity, which allows the laser to directly access the die surface and the photo diode, resulting in improved system performance and a higher yield.

Based on Atmel's proprietary photo-diode processing technology, the ATR1841 and ATR1842 ICs have a channel bandwidth of over 160MHz, while maintaining a low noise level of less than -80dBm, making it suitable for 8x HD DVD and Blu-ray drives.

Atmel claims that its process technology does not to suffer from degradation of the photo diode when exposed to blue laser light over extended periods of high temperature (as in a standard HD DVD/Blu-ray drive), which further improves the reliability and lifetime of the drives.

Samples in 3mm x 3mm QFN open packages are now available. Pricing starts at 80 cents for quantities of 10,000.
