Speaker amp LSI suits portable apps

Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd has released samples the ML2620 speaker amplifier LSI designed for in small and thin portable devices.

The ML2620 adopts Oki's signal processing technology, and with speakers that are 10- to 20mm in diameter, it can replay music with approximately twice the volume of conventional Oki models. The amplifier can also correct the volume and sound quality to optimum them for each device as it extracts the parameter for acoustic-effect characteristics.

The device enables various acoustic parameters to be set, enabling to replay at optimum volume and sound quality. Amplification is automatically controlled with the built-in AGC circuit. Soft sounds are replayed loud enough for clarity while loud sounds that could damage the speaker are replayed more softly.

In addition, the LSI can automatically change the volume one step at a time; from silent to the specified volume; from the current volume to silent; or from the current volume to the specified volume, enabling a more natural volume control.

"As portable devices such as mobile phones and portable TVs have limitations as to speaker size and acoustic space, it has been difficult to replay music and TV broadcasts at a louder volume with rich bass tone. On the other hand, when replaying programs that require a wide range of volume, there were cases where the sound would damage the speaker when the volume got too loud," said Masahiko Morioka, president of Silicon Solutions Co. at Oki.

Adopting Oki's ultra small W-CSP technology, the ML2620 achieves a package size level of 2.54mm x 2.42mm. The company also plans to provide the chip in 4mm x 4mm 20pin QFN. The LSI will be shipped in volume in December.
