Avago Technologies claims to have released the industry's first reflective encoder with analog output. The AEDR-8320 high-resolution miniature SMT optical encoder, which provides precise positioning information and direction sensing, is suitable for use in industrial and office automation applications where space is constrained.

Measuring 6.50mm x 4.20mm x 1.69mm, Avago's AEDR-8320 optical SMT reflective optical encoders can operate over a wide temperature range. The AEDR-8320 targets designers of pick and place machines, robotic equipment, optical disk drives, card readers, printers and copiers.

The AEDR-8320 series offers two channel analog output that provides a resolution of 180 lines per inch (LPI) for rotary and linear movement control. Moreover, its two channel analog outputs can achieve even higher resolutions through interpolation. The AEDR-8320 can achieve resolutions of 2.2?m to 10?m for linear movement and from 4,096 counts per revolution (CPR) to 7,840CPR for rotary sensing, utilizing an external interpolation IC.

According to Avago, the AEDR-8320 reflective encoders provides accurate real-time position sensing, performing better than competing encoders in terms of duty, state and phase. The devices are also insensitive to axial play and maintain performance and accuracy over a wide variation in the gap between sensor and code wheel or strip. The AEDR-8320 series can also be used with a reflective code wheel to sense rotary position and velocity, or with a linear code strip to sense linear position and velocity.

The RoHS compliant device requires a single 5V supply and operates in the temperature range of -10C to 70C.

Available today, the AEDR-8320 series of reflective optical encoders are priced at $4.80 each in quantities of 10,000.
