Gartner lists top 10 fabs based on 1H07 sales

In Gartner Inc.'s latest foundry rankings, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) has regained third place, bumping off Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd.

These rankings are based on sales in the first half of 2007.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TSMC) was first with a 42.3 percent share, followed by United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) (14.6 percent), SMIC (7.6 percent), Chartered (7 percent), IBM (2.9 percent), Vanguard (2.2 percent), X-Fab (1.9 percent), Dongbu (1.8 percent), MagnaChip (1.7 percent) and Hua Hong NEC (HHNEC) (1.5 percent), according to Gartner's list.

Overall foundry sales hit $10 billion in the first half, down 8.9 percent sequentially, according to the research firm.

TSMC remained in first place in the rankings, with a 42.3 percent share, according to Gartner. This is down 1.4 percent sequentially and down 3.8 percent in the like period a year ago.

Taiwan's UMC remained in second place in the rankings, with a 14.6 percent share. This is down 0.4 percent sequentially and up 0.1 percent in the like period a year ago.

China's SMIC jumped from fourth place in the first half of 2006 to third place in the first half of 2007. SMIC's market share hit 7.6 percent in the first half, up 0.8 sequentially and up 0.9 percent from a year ago.

Singapore's Chartered fell from third place in the first half of 2006 to fourth place in the first half of 2007. Its market share hit 7.0 percent in the first half, up 0.2 sequentially but down 0.3 percent from a year ago.

U.S.-based IBM Corp. remained in fifth place with 2.9 percent share in the first half of 2007, down 0.1 percent sequentially and down 0.5 percent from a year ago.

Taiwan's Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. jumped from eighth place in the first half of 2006 to sixth place in the first half of 2007. Vanguard's market share hit 2.2 percent in the first half, up 0.2 sequentially and up 0.6 percent from a year ago.

Germany's X-Fab Semiconductor Foundries AG jumped from tenth place in the first half of 2006 to seventh place in the first half of 2007. X-Fab's market share hit 1.9 percent in the first half, up 0.5 sequentially and up 0.6 percent from a year ago.

South Korea's Dongbu Hitech Co. Ltd fell from sixth place in the first half of 2006 to eighth place in the first half of 2007. Dongbu's market share hit 1.8 percent in the first half, up 0.1 sequentially and down 0.8 percent from a year ago.

South Korea's MagnaChip Ltd fell from seventh place in the first half of 2006 to ninth place in the first half of 2007. MagnaChip's market share hit 1.7 percent in the first half, down 0.2 percent sequentially and down 0.1 percent from a year ago.

China's HHNEC fell from ninth place in the first half of 2006 to tenth place in the first half of 2007. Its market share hit 1.5 percent in the first half, up 0.1 percent sequentially and up 0.1 percent from a year ago, according to Gartner.
