With a massive expansion plan on the way, South Korea-based Hynix Semiconductor Inc. has scrapped plans to sell its older M8 200mm fab in Cheong-ju, according to the Korea Times. The company instead plans to upgrade M8, which produces NAND flash memory products.

It is, however, still unclear what will happen to Hynix' other 200mm fab in Korea. Reports have circulated in June that the company has been in talks with TSMC and others to sell the 200mm NAND line, dubbed M9.

The output for both 200mm fabs is 300,000 wafers per month. With little or no fanfare, Hynix earlier this month claimed it will invest $13.3 billion by the end of 2010. As part of the plan, it claims it will build three or four 300mm chip lines, the report said.
