While the Blu-ray and HD DVD format war still has no permanent resolution in sight, the market for next-generation DVD is looking bullish as more consumers are developing a preference for high-resolution videos. Recognizing the promise of this market, and steering clear of the bipolar format war, China has unveiled its own homespun high-definition DVD format.

Dubbed the China High Definition DVD (CH-DVD), the new format was developed through a collaboration among research institutes and manufacturing enterprises, according to the ChinaTechNews report based on an announcement by the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC), a laboratory focused on optical disc research in Tsinghua University.

The physical format of CH-DVD includes homespun intellectual property, and is based on the DVD Forum-approved HD DVD. CH-DVD is supported by the China government and is intended to clear the way for the localization of blue-laser, high-definition DVD in China.

OMNERC has also established the China High Definition DVD Industry Association (CHDA), in cooperation with the DVD Forum and local and international partners. CHDA will lead in the promotion of CH-DVD and will push for the introduction of CH-DVD players in the China next year.

China will start HDTV broadcasts next year. In combination with HDTV, CH-DVD will provide a wide variety of HD content that will enrich viewer experience.
