3Gbps SDI portfolio aids product differentiation

National Semiconductor Corp. has released seven new products for professional and broadcast video applications designed to help video-system design engineers differentiate their end products. The new products join a comprehensive portfolio that includes serial digital interface (SDI), precision timing, analog video, LVDS, signal conditioning, performance audio and power management products.

The company offers a complete 3Gbps SDI portfolio of products, including equalizer (LMH0344), reclockers (LMH0356 and LMH0346), cable driver (LMH0302), serializer (LMH0340), deserializer (LMH0341) and crosspoint switch (DS25CP104). All National 3Gbps-SDI products have pin-compatible HD and SD versions, allowing designers to complete a single design and populate boards according to the required maximum data rate standard, such as SD, HD or 3Gbps.

The LMH0356 relocker supports SMPTE 424M, SMPTE 292M and SMPTE 259M standards and operates at serial data rates of 270Mbps, 1.483-, 1.485-, 2.967- and 2.97Gbps. It also supports DVB-ASI operation at 270Mbps and consumes 440mW of power from a single 3.3Vsupply. The LMH0356 operates from a single, low-cost 27MHz reference crystal and is supplied in a small 48-LLP package that is half the size of competitive devices.

Meanwhile, the LMH0074 SD-SDI cable equalizer operates over a wide range of data rates from 143- to 540Mbps and supports SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 344M standards. It automatically adapts and equalizes up to 400m of coaxial cable (Belden 1694A) with 0.2 unit intervals typical output jitter. It offers the low power, typically consuming only 208mW from a 3.3V supply. It also offers the high ESD rating of 8kV human body model (HBM) and is supplied in a 16-pin LLP package.

National's LMH0001 is the touted to be the industry's lowest power SD-SDI cable driver and is designed for use in SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 344M serial digital video applications. The device drives 75? transmission lines (Belden 8281, Belden 1694A or equivalent) at data rates up to 540Mbps, and consumes only 125mW of power from a 3.3V supply. The LMH0001 boasts high ESD rating of 5kV for HBM to protect systems from repetitive cable connections and disconnections. Also, it is the only SD-SDI cable driver capable of operating across the industrial temperature range from -40C to 85C. The LMH0001 is supplied in a 16-pin LLP package.

The LMH6580 and LMH6581 are fully buffered, non-blocking 8 x 4 analog crosspoint switches that support video resolutions of UXGA (1600 x 1200) and beyond. The switches provide a fixed gain of 1 and gain of 2, respectively. Both versions feature an -3dB bandwidth of 500MHz and a 0.1dB gain flatness out to 100MHz, ensuring adequate bandwidth for any video application. In addition, the low channel-to-channel crosstalk of -52dBc at 100MHz increases picture clarity by minimizing video artifacts and shadows from adjacent channels. Each buffered output can drive up to two back-terminated 75? video loads. Both LMH6580 and LMH6581 are supplied in a 48-pin TQFP package and feature diagonally symmetrical pin assignments to facilitate double-sided board layouts and expansion applications.

National's LMH6733 single-supply, 1GHz triple op amp and LMH6734 925MHz triple selectable gain buffer are designed for use in high-resolution video systems. The LMH6733 provides an industry-best 153.8 MHz/mA bandwidth-to-power ratio and the industry's largest 0.1dB gain flatness at 320MHz. The LMH6733's input voltage range and output voltage swing are optimized for operation on supplies as low as 3V and up to 10V, while only consuming 5.5mA per amplifier from a single 5V supply. The LMH6733 is supplied in a space saving 16-pin SSOP package.

The LMH6734 is a high-speed selectable gain buffer that offers a selectable internal gain of -1, 1 and 2. At a gain of 2, the LMH6734 supports ultra high resolution video systems with a -3dB large signal bandwidth (2Vpp) of 560MHz. With its large signal bandwidth and low supply current of 5.6mA per channel, the LMH6734 is well-suited for applications requiring wideband performance and low power consumption or driving component analog and high- resolution video in wideband applications, including matrix switchers, conference room systems and video over CAT5 cable. The LMH6734 is supplied in a space saving 16-pin SSOP package.

The LMH0356, LMH0074 and LMH0001 will begin sampling in Q4. The LMH0356, LMH0074 and LMH0001 are priced at $32, $10 and $4.25, each respectively, in quantities of 100. The LMH6580 and LMH6581 are available now and priced at $13.95, each in 100-unit quantities. The LMH6733 and LMH6734 are available now and priced at $2.95, each in 1,000-unit quantities.
