Digital armor could be protecting NATO military vehicles starting next year if a new secure battlefield communications network passes muster.

The MESHnet firewall developed by Secure Computing Corp. and General Dynamics Canada is currently undergoing testing. MESHnet is being touted as providing military vehicles with secure communications.

Scott Montgomery, VP of product management at Secure Computing, said MESHnet "consolidates all the major security functions into one of our blade computers, which can be mounted in the new conduction-cooled chassis being made by General Dynamics for harsh military environments."

General Dynamics worked with Secure Computing on the design of the mobile chassis and the downsizing of the MESHnet computer from its full-sized rack version to the current blade configuration needed for installation in military vehicles.

The MESHnet Firewall provides Evaluation Assurance Level 4 security (the highest is Level 7) and has been ruggedized to Military Standard 810. Secure Computing's Sidewinder Firewall software provides application-layer protection for networks by monitoring data streams to detect intrusion attempts, embedded viruses and security breaches.
