NEC TFT LCD panels display vivid colors

NEC LCD Technologies has introduced two new 6.5-inch (17cm-diagonal) amorphous-silicon TFT LCD modules with high luminance and VGA resolution.
The modules, part number NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D, eliminate the need for an inverter circuit by employing white LEDs for the backlight system, instead of CCFLs that are traditionally used. The white LED backlight system achieves low power consumption in a slim package that, while lightweight, is highly resistant to shock and vibration, making it ideal for use in portable display systems in industrial applications. By eliminating the need for an inverter circuit it becomes possible to curb the generation of high-frequency noise and harmonic current. Because the LED backlight system is free of mercury, the NEC modules are more environmentally friendly than modules using CCFL backlights. One of the new models, part number NL6448BC20-21C, incorporates NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary super-transmissive natural light TFT (ST-NLT) technology and is able to display vivid colors in environments with high ambient light, resulting in high reliability and excellent visibility in a variety of viewing environments.
Worldwide, the need for portable terminals in industrial applications has been rising rapidly. Since most of the portable terminals are battery powered they require low power consumption and compact lightweight displays that are durable enough for use in severe environments such as outdoors or in-vehicle.
Samples of the 6.5-inch NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D will be available for sampling in October. Pricing and availability are subject to change.
Meanwhile, NEC Electronics America will demonstrate a new 6.5-inch LCD module, part number NL10276BC13-01C, plus other modules with white LED backlight systems at Embedded Systems Conference on September 19-20.
