Underscoring its commitment to the Asia-Pacific market, Xilinx Inc. has opened its new and expanded regional headquarters in Singapore that can house up to 500 employees, providing four times the capacity of its previous on-site manufacturing facility and three times the in-house process development resources.

During the opening, Xilinx chairman, CEO and president, Wim Roelandts disclosed plans for increased investment in local R&D, beginning with the immediate expansion of its Singapore operation. The current R&D team is focused on next-generation FPGA design at 45nm and below for high-performance applications, working closely with product divisions in the United States and R&D centers worldwide. The existing engineering team will be expanded to include next-generation FPGA design for high-volume, low-cost applications.

Roelandts also announced the formation of a joint lab at the Republic Polytechnic (RP), the company's first in Southeast Asia. Donations in silicon and EDA software will enable professors and students to be trained in embedded system design and development for a variety of end applications (e.g., video and audio quality enhancement technologies for digital entertainment).

The guest of honor for the ceremony, Lim Hng Kiang, Singapore's minister for trade and industry, said, "I am glad that Xilinx has trusted Singapore with its key technology. Xilinx's R&D team based here is the first in Singapore to design products based on the 45nm technology node. This is a stamp of recognition for Singapore's IC design abilities, and will help strengthen Singapore's repute in the semiconductor industry."

"Innovation must be done close to the customer," commented Roelandts. "The excellent business environment in Singapore, in proximity to our customers in Asia Pacific, allows us to meet increased customer demand forprogrammable solutions in this rapidly growing, important market for digital consumer electronics. We're proud to play a role in nurturing the talent pool and broadening support here in Singapore, in collaboration with local industry, academia and non-profit organizations."

"Since establishing our Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore in 2004, Xilinx has experienced tremendous growth in the region," added XAP managing director Peter Phang, "We remain the #1 PLD vendor in Asia Pacific, with 48 percent market segment share in CY2006, and shipments from XAP grew by more than 75 percent from approximately $375 million in FY2006 to over $675 million in FY2007. With today's news, Xilinx is well positioned to continue to grow at an accelerated rate by meeting increased customer demand for programmable solutions in emerging application segments."

According to independent research firm iSuppli, the Asia Pacific semiconductor market (excluding Japan) is projected to grow from $134 billion in 2006 to $206 billion in 2011, while the Asia Pacific programmable logic market (excluding Japan) will grow from $1.2 billion in 2006 to $1.9 billion in 2011. Today, Asia Pacific and Japan together account for nearly 40 percent of Xilinx total revenues of $1.84 billion in FY2007 and is expected to account for over half of its worldwide business in the next few years.
