Samsung Electronics has signed an agreement to share digital-TV broadcasting patents with other TV manufacturers, according to a Reuters report.

The South Korean firm stated in a filing to the Korea Exchange that it was part of a pool that includes rival LG Electronics, LG subsidiary Zenith Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Mitsubishi Electric, Royal Philips Electronics and Cisco Systems unit Scientific Atlanta. A Samsung representative disclosed to Reuters that the move to form a patent pool was made to lessen risk of patent disputes but refused to provide further information on the pool system.

The deal, which runs until the end of 2016, charges $5 a royalty fee for each TV set using digital-broadcasting technology approved by the Advanced Television Systems Committee.
