Sony Corp. announced it will debut Dec. 1 the XEL-1, claimed to be the world's first OLED TV. Adding a new category to its TV business, the Japanese CE firm said it will progressively develop its OLED TV line, positioning it alongside its Bravia LCD TVs.

Sony began researching organic materials in 1994, and has since proceeded with the development of OLED technology targeted for use in practical applications. The company first launched mass production of small sized, full-color OLED panels in 2004, achieving commercial use within mobile products. It subsequently positioned OLED as a next-generation display device, and further accelerated its R&D on this technology.

Last month, Sony commenced mass production of its independently developed "organic panel" used in the XEL-1. The launch of XEL-1 represents the first stage in Sony's OLED TV business and the company said it will continue advancing its OLED TV development while focusing on long-term business growth.
