Wavecom SA is hoping to drive its intelligent-management software and machine-to-machine embedded subsystems by offering its own microprocessor design free of charge with a service contract.

The WMP50, an ARM9 derivative, will be offered free of up-front charges when customers take out a service contract estimated at only around $1.41 per month for three years.

Wavecom CEO Ron Black emphasized that the company has been pushing for adoption of its Open AT development platform and Intelligent Device Management software for several quarters now, as its primary differentiator. It is also working on a high-end WMP500 architecture.

Thus, offering the processor itself free of royalties and unit pricing is a way to spur adoption of the software, and encourage customers to upgrade to the WMP500 at a later date.

The latter processor will include such features as a CAN bus, analog interface and low-power modes.

The StarService contract provides core Open AT services, expandable to such plug-in services as Bluetooth and GPS. The contract provides secure access to IDM through specific keys loaded during the manufacturing process.

Firmware, diagnostics and application upgrades are included in the contract, though there is a charge for some communication protocols.

The microprocessor itself includes an integrated SIM-card device, implemented as a die stacked on the power management unit. Customers can order an external SIM card as an option.
